PE at Ben Rhydding

Intent

At Ben Rhydding Physical Education lessons are taught by both class teachers and sports coaches. As they progress through Ben Rhydding children will build upon skills from EYFS to Year 6. This progression of skills is taught through ‘Skills lessons’ and ‘Sports Specific lessons’.  Children can expand on these skills and interests through a range of extra-curricular sports clubs and competitive opportunities in school and in the local community. Children can compete in local competitions with other schools through the IGS Sport League. Throughout the year we compete in the Wharfe Valley Cross Country League which is available to every pupil who is interested. We offer Wake Up Shake Up sessions every morning.

Implementation

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in PE lessons. Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills, understanding and enjoyment of physical activity. We do this through a mixture of whole class teaching and individual or group activities. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance as models for the other children, and we encourage the children to evaluate their own work as well as the work of other children. Within lessons, we give the children the opportunity to both collaborate and compete and use a wide range of resources that link with our whole school long term plan.

We run Outdoor Educational residential visits in Year 3 (Buckden House) and Year 6 (Robin Wood). We encourage the pupils to be physically active at playtimes and engage with the playground equipment. In Year 5 the children take part in Forest School and swimming lessons. In EYFS, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 the children participate in Bikeability.

Impact

Our children at Ben Rhydding are part of a community that creates an encouraging, inclusive environment that allows all children to take part in physical activity and have the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.

Supporting SEND

In all lessons, children have a wide range of physical ability. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this through setting common tasks that are open-ended and can have a variety of results. We have a range of resources that support the needs of all our children at Ben Rhydding.

What pupils say…

“I love PE, it’s my favourite lesson. We learn new skills and then put them into practice through a sport. I like competing against my friends” – Lucas (Year 4)

“PE is good because we get to run around and use equipment that we haven’t used before” – Flora (Year 1)

“I love dance because I go to dance outside of school so in school I get to teach my friends new moves and we can make a dance routine up together in our dance lessons” – Cordelia (Year 2)
